about
Synesthesia causes me to see a particular color associated with every number and letter of the alphabet. I match threads to the colors I see in text, then weave cloth that contains coded language in the woven pattern.
I use this process to explore issues of identity politics, gender and sexuality, as well as social hierarchies that are played out through clothing and language.
By meticulously hand making cloth, a seemingly ubiquitous material, I examine the process of constructing personal and gender identity through clothing and textiles.
Of particular interest are the everyday objects; clothes and textiles we read as "normal" or "natural."
For example, it fascinates me that a man in the USA might feel "naturally masculine" in a flannel shirt, which was constructed by a woman in Bangladesh.
Recently I have begun hand embroidering with scrap yarn, in conjunction with my hand wovens. I'm Fascinated by uniforms for boy scouts, baseball players, and service workers.
